The roots of Hakes
The process of finding a suitable place and applying there was long and difficult, it took almost two years until I actually got to Belgium. But when I got back home from the internship in autumn 2002, I was convinced that every young person should experience such a wonderful and useful opportunity and study abroad. The birth of Hakes In 2004, there was a competition held by a Danish higher education institution named Aarhus Business College, to find an international co-operation partner. I saw this as an opportunity to fulfill what I had been dreaming of for a long time. Collaboration between the two institutions (AABC and Hakes) began instantly. Hakes came up with a new system, which made the application process a lot easier for the candidates. In 2005, four students began their studies in Aarhus Business College. As the students where very staisfied and thankful to Hakes, the Hakes team felt that this is a possibility that every young person deserves so we begane working much more actively. So we broadened our relations to four partner institutions in Denmark and were assigned the representation rights in the three Baltic states. Big and friendly Hakes International family 2007 brought Hakes a massive increase of applications, jumping from 145 to 600 with one year resulting in 225 people going to study from all over Central and Eastern Europe. Due to interest of more possibilities and countries we carefully broadened our network of partnerinstituions to 20 resulting in a possibility to go to study into 8 countries and choosing from almost 800 different programmes taught English. In 2008 we are prepared to accept all applications and able to find a good study place abroad to all people who want to go study and can manage in English. Märt Aro Founder of Hakes International |

The roots go much further back in history then the ideas of Hakes itsself but the track is still clear. In 1998 I was active in local youth government in my small and sunny hometown Kuressaare. From the time of working in this youth organisation I have always been passionately working with helping and developing young people. From the organisation I was sent to represent Western Estonia in International Youth Congress which took place in Lübeck, Germany. This event rose my interest in going to study abroad trumendously.
