Expenses

The will, motivation and meeting the requirements is one thing when going to study abroad, but it also means costs. Those who say that studying abroad is for free are not completely honest with you. In some cases you do not have to pay tuition fee or it can be covered with study loan, but travel, food and lodging for the first moths (before you will find a part time job) is quite a big expense for the start.

See the most common costs related to application, moving, settling down and studying in foreign country.

Language Test Cost

Basically all the international universities/colleges want to be sure in applicants' sufficient language skills. If you have taken or you will take internationally recognized TOEFL, IELTS or CAE (also known as Cambridge Test), the result of your test is accepted practically in all international institutions. Most of Hakes partner institutions accept also our own, Hakes Language Test (HLT). More information about tests recognized by the schools and for specific programmes you will find from our programmes list.
The cost for language test depends on the test. Here you will find some examples:

Application Fee

In the future applying trough Hakes will be free of charge, but for now we ask for a not so big application fee, which is around 20€. Exact sums in local currencies are following*:

Country Fee in Local Currency
Bulgaria 40 BGN
Estonia 300 EEK
Latvia 15 LVL
Lithuania 70 LTL
Poland 80 PLN
Romania 80 RON
Slovenia 20 EUR

  * Hakes International can change the fees without noticing. It won't influence invoices already issued or payments in progress.

Deposit Payment*

We ask you to pay a deposit of 280€. You have to pay the deposit when you accept the conditional or unconditional offer of the institution in our online system. You will get it back when you complete the 1st semester. Deposit is necessary to convince university/college (and also us) in your sincere will and motivation to study abroad.
Read more about Hakes deposit conditions and if you have any additional questions about it, please contact Hakes people in your country.

* Information is changed on the 10th of February.

Cost for Travel and Shipping

Fortunately, the costs for flights are not so big nowadays. Look around for sales and book as early as possible in advance and you will get a good price. The price mainly depends on the flight company and the distance.
All the flight companies have the limit for baggage weight. In many cases you have to pay a lot as extra if you exceed the weight. This limit is not usually enough for taking all your necessary things for three years with you. Check for options to send your things by post or with courier. Another way is divide your things so that you can bring some things every time you visit home, but still enough so that you "survive" in the time between.
The cost for the travel and shipping varies a lot and depends on the distance between your home town and city you are going to study.

Accommodation

In every case you need to pay for your accommodation. It is not included in tuition fee. In many cases you even have to look the place to stay on your own. See more details about the accommodation from here and check also our institutions list.

Study Materials and Study Trips

It depends on the institution you are going to study, but in most of the cases you need to buy all necessary study materials and equipment. For example, if you do not have a lap top, then most probably you have to buy it. In some cases the program involves study trips abroad and also these trips are not included in tuition fee and cost extra. It all depends on the institution. See more information about specific program from our program list.

Food, Clothes and Other Daily Experiences

If you haven't had experience with living on your own and being financially independent, ask your parents what are the costs for living beside accommodation and food. Being abroad you have to manage with all of these costs. Food, clothes, kitchen tools, local transport, costs for entertainment etc.. You can spare, but you can not avoid these costs. All these kind of costs depend a lot on the country you are going and even on the city you are going to live. Consult with students who are already studying there and living in the same city to get the most adequate information.
