Heraklion itself is the largest city and the “capital” of Crete with around 300,000 inhabitants, being also the economical centre of the island. Though the city of Heraklion is 30 km away of the gorgeous white sand beach of the Minoan International College, students do not see this as a problem to go shopping or partying there once in a while as there are good roads connecting Minoan and the city. Heraklion is an important shipping port and ferry dock. The public can take ferries and boats from Heraklion to a multitude of destinations including Thira, Rhodes, Egypt, Haifa and mainland Greece. Heraklion International Airport, or Nikos Kazantzakis Airport is located about 5km east of the city. There are regular domestic flights to and from Athens, Thessaloniki and Rhodes. For those who wish to learn a little bit about the history, Heraklion is a home to ancient monuments and examples of major Western civilization. Heraklion is a city of water sports, offering opportunities for diving, windsurfing and sailing. In Heraklion, there are a great number of restaurants and taverns offering traditional Cretan food as well as international cuisine.
