Enschede

Enschede is a characteristic, modern and lively university town. Elegant historic buildings in the town and surrounding area show Enschede’s rich past. Some of the town’s most notable monuments are the beautiful town hall, several beautiful churches and a unique synagogue. At the same time, large-scale urban renewal has given Enschede a new skyline with eye-catching, contemporary architecture. Well worth a visit is the Van Heekplein shopping centre that gives the town a modern and a lively charm.

ImageToday, with approximately 152,000 inhabitants, Enschede is the largest town in the east of the country and the twelfth largest metropolitan area in the Netherlands. Still, the town has had its share of setbacks. In 1862 a fire almost completely destroyed the entire town. The decline of the textile industry in the second half of the previous century also left its marks. When the University of Twente was established here, as well as a number of high-quality industrial businesses, Enschede rapidly climbed out of the dip.

The city has become one of the most loved Dutch student cities. It has a pleasant atmosphere and beautiful surroundings and it was nominated as the city with the best student facilities (housing, entertainment, sports, etc.).The centre provides you with lots of bars and restaurants and possibilities to enjoy music, theatre and art. There are also plenty of sporting facilities; Enschede has over ninety indoor sporting grounds.

Enschede has a relatively important student population: many of the 10,000 Saxion University students and the 4,000 Technical University students live in this city and meet each other in the bars, discos, etc in the centre. All the bars and restaurants are situated around the Old Church, on the market square. Especially in summer when everybody sits outside having a drink it’s always a social happening. A not unimportant advantage for students is finding accommodation. In Enschede this is still relatively easy compared to the struggle you have to go through in Amsterdam or Utrecht, but Saxion University is doing everything they can, to help.
