Deventer

Deventer is a medieval Hanseatic town on the river Ijssel. A town that always has a certain atmosphere: lively, light minded, overflowing.

Deventer is one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands, therefor it does not come as a surprise that the oldest brick private house is to be found there. Deventer was a prominent member of the Hanseatic league. Over the last thirty years the city of Deventer has devoted a lot of attention to the renovation and conservation of the historic town centre. The old street pattern is virtually unchanged and hundreds of monumental buildings have been restored, often with newly decorated windows or new facades. But there are definitely new buildings as well; some of which are designed to blend in with the historic background, others that are completely modernising.

For centuries Deventer has had the reputation of being hospitable. You will easily feel welcome here. There is something here for everyone; for those who like to go out shopping, there are various stores and many typically original and cute little shops conveniently arranged in the town centre. There is also big shopping- and entertainment centres just on the outskirts of the town.

Deventer is also a market-town; every Friday and Saturday there is a market on the town square De Brink. Proof of Deventer’s hospitality can be found in the many cafes and restaurants, situated around the town square.

Local students find the most popular places to go on a night out the discotheque The Luxor and café The Joffer, both situated on the square The Brink. The city also offers “Burgerweeshuis”, that organizes popular theme parties, concerts and for example salsa dancing during the week.

Students who are interested in sports, Deventer city offers a variety of sports facilities. There are clubs for table tennis, rowing, soccer, badminton, fitness and more. The Scheg is a well-known sports centre that offers indoor sports. The Scheg also has a tropical swimming pool and an ice skating rink during the winter. Deventer is also nearby a recreation park Bussloo where you can you can swim, surf, play golf and more.
